By Frank LingIf you were involved in an accident and your car was deemed by your insurance company as not repairable, you have a wrecked or totaled car on your hands.
Three things can happen at this point. The insurance company will offer to buy your totaled car as scrap mental or salvage; you can decide to keep the wrecked car and sell it off in parts; you can donate it to a charity.
All three solutions have their merits and depending on your circumstances and needs, one solution will be more appropriate than the others. We’ll go over these and offer one more possibility.
Sell It to the Insurance CompanyBe aware that the insurance company will not be giving you top dollar for your wreck and will significantly lower the real worth of it.
They’ll resell it to a salvage company or parts business and make a profit. If this is something that bothers you in principle, you can try the next step.
Sell It Off In PartsThis method takes a lot of patience, a storage area for your wrecked car, and a good deal of work to place ads on the Internet, the newspapers, or through car clubs.
Odd as it may sound your wrecked car is probably worth more in pieces than whole. Car owners are always looking for replacement parts for their cars and love a deal, so they resort to buying what they need through junk yards and private sales.
If your car isn’t a model such as the Honda Accord or Toyota Camry, and others in this class, this strategy may not be a good idea because there is a much lower demand for car parts for models that aren't as popular.
Donate ItMany charities now accept donations of cars. If your car is acceptable to them, they’ll write you a receipt stating the value of the car so you can use it for tax deduction purposes.
But some of these organizations have become very picky about what they’ll accept, so they may turn you down if your car isn’t in the condition they want.
